Gender Disparity in Entrepreneurship
Women and non-binary entrepreneurs have been long undereppresented in entrepreneurship. One of the biggest reasons for this comes from the fact that women-owned businesses have had a lower financial success rate compared to men-owned businesses due to the lack of capital. According to Fortune, Venture capital’s funding gender gap has become an increasingly worsened issue from the 2000s to the 2010s; In 2017, only $1.9 billion venture capital (VC) funding was contributed toward female-founded businesses, whereas male-founded businesses generated over $60 billion in VC deals. The lack of venture capital funding is even worse for minority women entrepreneurs, as many have been denied the loans and credit needed to run their enterprise. Black women entrepreneurs have especially experienced this as a challenge, paying higher interest rates than non-minority women entrepreneurs.
As for nonbinary business owners, many believe that the business world is more gender binary. As an entrepreneur, blogger “Pretty in Punk” expresses many issues has a non-binary business person in a binary business world, explaining that many have “forgotten there's a huge group of other people who are also disenfranchised by the status quo [aside from women]” when it comes to tackling business dicrimination. That’s why MED AID works to provide multiple resources to connect a community of underrepresented entrepreneurs, letting them know that they’re not alone.
